First Wind Captures Maui’s Natural Resources

Kaheawa Wind Farm

Built in 2003, the Kaheawa wind farm drops like a garland down a gusty spine of the West Maui Mountains. When the blades spin, Maui Electric is able to decrease the output of diesel generators. It is estimated that the 30 megawatt wind farm, using the latest GE turbines, supplies about 9% of Maui’s annual electricity needs and up to 30% during off-peak times. Kaheawa is moving to expand the project to increase its capacity.
