Ocean Vodka launched in 2005 with the goal of producing and selling high-end vodka, while being eco-friendly, striving for sustainability and using 100 percent solar power.
“We set out to create the best vodka in the world, a lasting brand that would present a clean and pure product into the marketplace,” said Shay Smith, the company’s chief executive officer. “We did research, made friends, tested it. People loved it. They wanted more.”
The family-owned business went from concept to reality in about 1 1/2 years. Now, Ocean Vodka is marketed in 25 states and three provinces in Canada. The company is expanding fast into North America, South America and Asia. Since 2007, Ocean Vodka has been the exclusive vodka on Hawaiian Airlines, and it’s the best-selling spirit from Hawaii, Smith said.
The Ocean Vodka Organic Farm & Distillery employs 10 people. The company controls all supply and production, with farming, distilling, manufacturing, marketing and sales consolidated for the first time since the brand’s inception eight years ago. “The new facility further solidifies Ocean’s growing presence in the marketplace and supports a ten-fold increase in business and new opportunities to expand production into rums and whiskies,” Smith said.
The business is venturing into agri-tourism, offering visitors to the farm and distillery tours, events and weddings. “Our home now welcomes locals and tourists alike as a destination spot and a memory generator,” Smith said.
The business’ success hinges on its mission “to create a superior organic, value-added agricultural product from Hawaii that embodies a deep love and respect for the ocean and the natural beauty of our home.”
“This appreciation and the drive to be more eco-conscious, to strive for sustainability, ultimately led to the creation of Ocean Vodka,” Smith said. And, “we like to indulge in the finer things in life, and the ingredients were at our fingertips.”
