2011 APEC Opportunity Series

– A nine-session “APEC 2011 Opportunity Series” starting July 28 will focus on the market opportunities in APEC economies specific to Hawaii businesses, how to do business in each country, and the resources available for finding buyers or partners in each market.

The series, developed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and sponsored by the Hawaii Pacific Export Council and Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, features speakers from private sector firms with experience in key APEC economies, as well as dynamic speakers from the U.S. embassies in each APEC market.

The first session, featuring Japan and South Korea, will be held July 28 from 2-4pm at the Hawaii Foreign Trade Zone Main Conference Room. Topics include the latest on the recovery in Japan and the current business climate and the huge potential of the pending free trade agreement with South Korea.

The Japan and South Korea seminar will be followed by seminars featuring market opportunities in the following pairings: Canada and Mexico; Hong Kong and Taiwan; China; Chile and Peru; Vietnam and Indonesia; Thailand, Philippines, and Russia; Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea; Brunei, Malaysia, and Singapore. Each seminar will take place at the Hawaii Foreign Trade Zone.

Seven of the United States top 15 trade partners are in APEC. In addition, the 21 member economies of APEC account for 55 percent of global GDP, purchase 58 percent of U.S. goods exports, and collectively comprise a market of 2.7 billion consumers. Established by 12 economies in 1989, APEC promotes growth and prosperity by facilitating economic cooperation and expanding trade and investment throughout the region.
